| | | Hmmmm, I have to say I preferred the first half of Uncharted compared to the second half. True, it borrowed/thieved from Tomb Raider but that series hasn't exactly covered itself in glory over the years. I think they struck a great balance with the first Uncharted and something broadly similarly in terms of pacing and design would be great for me. |

| | I wasn't too keen when I first stumbled onto the second half of the game and it was so different but I very quickly changed my mind and I look forward to that part now when playing.
Good post tho |

| | | I think Tomb Raider suffered from the same problem that the Uncharted series will. There is only so much you can do with a plot like Uncharted/Tomb Raider has. After a while, the levels are going to all look the same and the only thing different will be the puzzels. I sure hope Naughty Dog can take the series into new territory but I doubt that genre of games. BTW, I was a huge fan of the first Tomb Raider for PS1. All the other ones got really boring. |

| | I don't know I mean it is set in a real world setting and it is a big wide world. I did like the lush green jungles but the game could easily move to say egypt or even a city. Atlantis is a possibility but I'm not too keen on that. There are huge amounts of legends it could adopt, it could even blatantly copy Indiana Jones completely and do the Holy Grail or something. Unless George Lucas also owns the Bible now lol |

| | True dat. But that's the whole point to these kinds of games. Your first one is a hit because it's an awsome game but then the sequals start to fall back. You listed Egypt, a city and Atlantis.
The Egypt sceanario will look like the first game. There's only so much running in the sand that you can do before you go into pyramids with ledges inside and waterways..same as the first.
The City sounds interesting but then, how is this plot going from from the first Uncharted to the 2nd one? Before, you where looking for old treasures and solving ancient riddles/puzzels. In the cities, you won't have that. It can't be set in NYC. That would look like Drake's Uncharted Theft Auto 2.
If the plot is set in Atlantis, it will certainly look like the first game. Most sketches of Atlantis have it looking like a set of ruins amid lush junglescapes.
Stealing from the Indie series, or Tomb Raider is just a bad idea.
What pissed me off in the first part is when you go to the extras and you look at the Naughty Dog video, they claim to have invented a WHOLE different style of game. Please! Its a good game but it is not origional. Because of that type of arrogance, I really believe that part 2 will look just like the first. |
|
| | Well I think that's the beauty of Uncharted, I don't think the plot has to follow the first one. I think Drake can have different adventures which are unlinked. He's a fortune hunter so could search anywhere for treasure.
My city idea wouldn't have to set the whole game in a city, what about a raid in a museum in London or NYC to steal an artifact which has a link to something bigger. Drake could then travel anywhere in the world, I think India could be a good plce to set part of the game. |

| | Uncharted did Tomb Raider better than Eidos ever did. But you are right, about the repetition. The best way to prevent it is to pace sequels out over a large length of time even generations apart. Eidos spammed Tomb Raider games early on. |

| | I completely agree about the Tomb Raider series. Yet I think that series went downhill because it forgot what made the first game so good; the sense of wonder and exploration - the puzzle aspect of how to get from A to B. Tomb Raider 2 focused on the weakest part - the combat - and added badly conceived novelties like the speedboat. I don't think it went downhill because it ran out of ideas or settings. Core tried to cash quick and the series paid the price; Let's hope Naughty Dog learn from that.
I think if Uncharted 2 has a strong story - a simple one that keeps you hooked, nothing deep - and some suitably evocative environments then it's halfway there. Add in a bit of variety to the combat - new weapons, new acrobatic abilities for Drake - and that'll help. Maybe having a few more open missions would be a good idea; ones that allow you to weave a way through larger levels in the way you choose. I think there's plenty of room to go forward with the series.
I think you're right to have concerns about how this will end up though; there are no guarantees that heritage will bring quality, as Tomb Raider showed. Yet Naughty Dog seemed to do such a good job with Uncharted that I'm more optimistic then pessimistic. I guess we'll see. Now I'm off to burn as copy of Tomb Raider 2. |

| Hopefully Naughty Dog's level designers have better imaginations than I do.
The only level I could think of is a nice romp through a whorehouse. It would go something like this.
"Drake, you found the 'ivory sun horn' all it needs is to be inserted some place moist and dark. Where do you think it goes?"
"I'm off to the whorehouse to see if a smart hooker can help me."
Next, since you don't have money, you have to break into a whorehouse, dodge the bouncers (or kill them) then find a hooker and jam the "Ivory Sun Horn" into a hooker's ass. If you look at the bottom of the "Ivory Sun Horn" whilst it's in her ass, you can then see where to find a great treasure. Take the hooker with you to pay her when you get the treasure. Also, if you get lost, you can always jam the thing in her ass to make sure you're going in the right place.
etc...etc...etc...
Does anyone need a level designer? |

| I'm psyched for this. Though I did just sell my PS3, my roommate is getting one soon anyway.
Uncharted was a rare gem in today's world of games. And watching the bonus content on what went into the making of the game, I expect nothing but pure awesomeness from Uncharted 2. |
