| Red Dead Redemption has been getting excellent reviews. But how do the two console versions compare? No surprises here. Like most games, it looks and runs best on the most powerful console. after playing an hour of both games, and switching back and forth between the two systems on our display, it's clear that the 360 version has quite the graphical advantage. It's sharper, with much less aliasing. The faces of the characters were clearer in the opening section. Gameplay sections likewise looked better, with smoother graphics across the board. The PlayStation 3 version looked impressive, but there was a noticeable jump in quality while playing on the 360.
Keep in mind that the game doesn't look bad on the PS3—not by any stretch—but based on our time with the game and direct comparisons, the 360 version looks better.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/05/read-dead-redemption-360-vs-ps3-our-thoughts.ars Red Dead Redemption on the PS3 appears to be internally rendering at a lower resolution--some think 1152 x 640, or GTA IV's PS3 resolution--after which it's being software upscaled to 1280 x 720, or 720p, with quincunx anti-aliasing applied to smooth things over. That's compared to the Xbox 360 version, which runs natively at 720p, isn't being software upscaled, and employs 2x multisample anti-aliasing.

| | All the heat of discussions going on here, and at the end of the day, their both as powerfull, the 360 having the more powerfull GPU, and for the PS3, the Cell mediaprocessor makes it up abit for that. |
| | | No Steve it actually runs better on the least powerful console. It's the same engine as GTA4, it's not been improved to utilise the extra power available to the PS3 over the 360. |
| | | The GTA4 engine doesn't seem all that well optimized, especially considering how poorly it runs on PCs that are much faster than either of the consoles. |
| | | Wasn't GTA4 Rockstars first PS3 game. Would be nice to see a proper engine for Agent. |
| | | Xbox 360 is the most powerful console. Anyone with enough knowledge can determine that from the console specs. And Red Dead Redemption is clearly utilizing the extra power available to the Xbox 360 to look and run better. |
| | | I think that exclusives are the best way to gauge a consoles power and as we all know the PS3 is way out in front. Alan Wake looked like it may have challenged them but fell by the wayside. |
| | Exclusives are subjective. An opinion that Alan Wake looks better than all PS3 exclusives is perfectly valid. If PS3 had Alan Wake, we could compare the two versions. And most likely it would run best on Xbox 360.
Right now we're looking at Red Dead Redemption. We've known for years that Xbox 360 is the most powerful console, so running best on Xbox 360 is just business as usual. Xbox 360 wins again! |
| | | Alan Who? That game has been out for a day and it's already been forgotten. It was Max Payne 2 with better lighting. |

| These numbers (from GameRankings) will change a bit as more reviews come in, but Red Dead Redemption is currently the top rated game of 2010. So it's obviously a game that holds weight in a platform comparison.
1. Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360) - 96.04% 2. Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360) - 95.70% 3. Mass Effect 2 (PC) - 94.24% 4. Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - 93.85% |
