| | | Yep, me too, exept i've got a K7S5a (SiS735 chipset) with in-built audio. I've tried SiS 7012 / Sis 7018 and AC'97 drivers, none of them work.
I get the exact same message, i've tried safe mode (which turned out exactly the same as normal mode) i've tried editing the registry but it wont let me delete the "Multimedia Audio Controller" regestry keys.
I don't think it is the BIOS either, as i tried to use XP PRO before and gave up (with the same problem) and went back to 98SE, since then i've had a few BIOS updates and it still doesn't work now.
Does anyone actualy know what stupid windows XP actualy means by "the name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name"??? |

Haze, who posted on Nov 20th something - is DA MAN! I had EXACTLY the same "SiS Audio Driver Hardware Problem/Name Already In Use" error in XP even though I had also had it running BEFORE I reformatted, and I tried EVERYTHING for TWO DAYS, uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, disabled, NOTHING. He is 100% ON THE MONEY.
Windows apparently keeps "Hardware Profiles" THROUGH a FULL, CLEAN INSTALL, so I guess they're saved to the BIOS or something; when you install XP, it will read your hardware profiles and find the (probably) OLD SIS driver info, and automatically install it, thus placing that "Display Name" in the Registry, which blocks you from installing the new version. You HAVE to delete this entry. Also note if you have multiple profiles, you'll need to delete this key in EACH of them (they'll be listed as CurrentControlSet000, etc.)
1- Make sure you HAVE downloaded the SIS7012 or 7018 driver onto your PC and its unzipped so you can get to it easily (I put mine in my Downloads/SisDriver). Although you probably CAN update after you get rid of the old reg key, I like to be safe.
2- Do Regedit here:
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/SERVICES and DELETE the ENTIRE SIS7018 and/or SIS7012 keys (just those obvious relevant numbers though, other SIS stuff seems to be okay).
3- Go into Control Panel>System>Device Manager - remove/uninstall the generic sounding Audio Control Driver or whatever its called, the one that XP "thinks" is the SIS driver.
4- Go to the Add/Remove Programs menu and wipe out any SIS Audio Drivers that may have (partially) gotten installed.
5- Reboot
6- When XP "finds" your Audio Sound Card, DO NOT let it automatically install the best driver, but instead select the "install from a specific location" and browse to the folder where you unzipped the driver files, and into the XP subfolder and click OK. In a few seconds, you'll hear a "pop", signifying you have SOUND again!
Note that as long as you delete the old SIS key from the registry, updating from Windows Update or other online source will probably work, but I wasn't taking any chances and it worked fine for me by installing from the file on my PC - but again, you probably COULD let it automatically install it from the net, once the key is gone from the Registry.
Thanks to Haze and good luck to everyone else! |

| | Doc . . .you are a miracle worker. Thanks for elaborating on Haze's post. Nothing sucks more than having a kick-ass speaker system and no sound! I would have never thought to use the regeditor. Thanks again. |

| Hello to everybody,
I had a problem with my "multimedia audio Controller". Silly me I unistalled that device or whatever and then I discovered that I HAD NO SOUND AT ALL.
After read your advices I worked it out.
Windows XP didn't allow me to reinstall that driver directly, I mean without get the original driver from a cd or floppy. So fortunately this time I've got the proper driver to reinstall it.
But the thing is WHY Win XP doesn't allow me to restore that driver after uninstall it? The device manager doesn't work??? OR maybe it's me???
CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO LIKE HELP PEOPLE LIKE ME
well done
and thank very much |
| | | | I had the same prob with the XP reinstall and it was solved when I updated my BIOS. That's all it took. The problem just disappeared. Go figure. |
